The 25-registration plate is the newest edition of the plates fitted to vehicles in the United Kingdom. The format of registration plates are two letters at the start representing the location the vehicle was registered, for example RA represents a vehicle registered in Reading. The two digits after are two number, corresponding to the year and time of year the vehicle was registered, with the final three letters being randomised. An example plate is ‘RA25DKN’, showing a vehicle registered in Reading between March 1st and August 31st 2025.
The 25 registration plates will be available starting 1st March 2025. In March and September of each year, the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) introduces new driving plates to new vehicles. Through releasing 2 separate plates each year, providing a consistent update to registrations, as well as making it easier to identify a vehicles age.
The value of a vehicle can be greatly impacted by its registration plate. Registration plates like the 25 reg often boost a car's worth more than older plates. This is due to the vehicle's age playing a key role in how quickly it depreciates. Cars with newer registration plates are often seen as more advanced and current in terms of technology, which makes them more desirable in the resale market.
The DVLA issues the registration plates in the UK. Whether it's a first-time registration or a change of ownership, the DVLA allocates a registration number following the established format and available combinations. For the 25 reg plates, the process stays the same: anyone purchasing a new vehicle from March 1 2025 will receive plates marked with the "25" identifier.
Rules for the issuance and use of 25 plates:
Hire Purchase (HP): This enables businesses to separate the cost of the vehicle into fixed monthly payments over time.
Personal Contract Hire: A long-term rental arrangement where businesses pay a set monthly fee and returns the vehicle at the end of the contract, with no option to buy.
