75 Reg Plates: Explained

PUBLISHED ON: 18/08/2025

The new ’75’ plates release on 1st September, here is what you need to know

What are 75 registration plates?

The 75 registration plates are the next edition of vehicle registrations used by the DVLA. The structure for registration plates in the UK is as follows; the first two letters correspond to where the vehicle was registered, for example a YS registration plate is fitted to vehicles registered in Sheffield. The two numbers following represent when the vehicle was registered, for example a 75 reg plate car would be registered between 1st September 2025 – 28th February 2026, with the final three letters randomised. An example plate may look like YS75RJV.

When are the 75 reg plates available?

The 75 registration plates become available from the 1st of September 2025 and run up to the 28th of February 2026. Twice a year, in March and September, the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) updates UK registration plates ensuring identification of a vehicles age can be done easier.

How do 75 reg plates influence car value

A vehicles registration plate can have a noticeable impact on the value. As of the 1st of September, the 75 plates will be the newest registration plate, which usually means a higher value in comparison to older registration plates, as the age of a vehicle has a direct impact on how much the vehicle has depreciated by. A car with a newer registration plate is often perceived as being more reliable, technologically advanced and modern, meaning a higher resale value for these vehicles is common.

How do the DVLA 75 reg plates work?

The DVLA issues the new registration plates in the United Kingdom. When a vehicle is registered, whether that be for the first time or for a change in ownership, a current format will be given to the vehicle based on available combinations. This process is the same for 75 plate vehicles, with vehicles registered between 1st of September 2025 and 28th of February 2026 receiving a ‘75’ as part of the number plate. This ensures vehicles can be identified on the roads in the UK.

What are the rules for the new 75 registration plates?

1.      Eligibility: Vehicles must be first registered between 1 September 2025 and 28 February 2026 to qualify for 75 reg plates.

2.      Display Requirements: Number plates must be clearly visible and easy to read, following all DVLA rules regarding font style, size, and character spacing.

3.      Personalisation: While drivers can opt for custom number plates, these must still meet DVLA-approved formats and cannot breach content restrictions.

4.      Vehicle Transfers: Registration plates may be moved to another vehicle, provided the correct paperwork is completed and any applicable fees are paid to the DVLA.

Finance options available for businesses with the new 75 plate vehicles

Hire Purchase (HP): This option enables businesses to finance a vehicle by spreading the cost over a set period with fixed monthly instalments. Full ownership is transferred to the business once all payments have been completed.

Finance Lease: Under this arrangement, the business leases the vehicle for a predetermined period and makes regular payments. At the lease’s end, the vehicle may be sold, with a portion of the sale proceeds returned to the business.

Contract Hire: This functions as a long-term rental agreement where the business pays a fixed monthly fee and returns the vehicle when the contract ends, with no option to buy.

Operating Lease: This lease allows the business to use the vehicle for a shorter period than a finance lease, without any intention of ownership.
