Over 50% of electricity in the UK was generated by renewables

The UK sees a new record high from renewable energy sources, with 50.4% of electricity generated from renewable energy, for the first time ever.

Renewable energy was made up of solar power, wind power, hydropower and biomass, improving on 2023’s contribution of 46.5%, which record figures from wind and bioenergy being key contributors.

Shares from low carbon sources, which are made up of nuclear and renewable energy, rose to a record high of 64.7%.

Wind as a singular power source contributed to 29.2% of power in the UK, only narrowly beaten by gas at 30.4%, still the biggest source of UK power.

Oil and natural gas production was also down 8.8% and 10% respectively, with both non-renewable sources reaching record lows.
